My New Toy ... A Palm Treo 700wx for Sprint
The package finally arrived yesterday. Inside it, two brand new Palm Treo 700wx phones for both Justin and I.
While a full-fledged PDA phone is new to Justin who is using it to replace his current Samsung Mobile Phone, I'm not a stranger to PDA Mobile Phones. I'm using the Treo 700wx to replace my current PDA Mobile Phone which happens to be a Palm Treo 650 for Sprint. The only downside to the Treo 650 and the reason why I wanted to upgrade so quickly was that the 650 wasn't capable of using the new EVDO highspeed mobile network, and it has a Linux based PalmOS. I've been wanting to try switching to Windows Based PocketPC OS for some time now, which is why I'm switching to the 700wx as it comes loaded with Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC for Phones.
My PDA Mobile Phone is pretty much my life line these days. Without the integrated calendar notifying me of daily meetings, my contact list at my fingertips, and accessibility to text messaging and e-mail I would simply be lost. So while many go for the sleek new thin razor mobile phones I can better appreciate a phone that acts more like a palmtop computer.
My first impressions of the Palm Treo 700wx are pretty good. After having been a loyal PalmOS user for the past 6 years I've found some of the Windows Mobile 5.0 features better then it's PalmOS counterpart, but also I've notice some basic things missing. I do feel that the PalmOS devices were more suited to one handed use, and I've found with the 700wx, it's sometimes necessary to use both hands or spend more time looking at the screen. While I love the way the contact list and searching features are setup, I do miss the threaded SMS of the Treo 650. I'm excited about the tight integration with Outlook and Microsoft Office with the 700wx and I'm thrilled to be able to sync my calendar with my work laptop and then sync my contacts and e-mail with my personal PC. In that respect it's much better then the PalmOS which always had trouble with multiple PC Sync'ing.
I can't quite pinpoint everything that's different, but what surprises me is that I would have thought that the Windows Mobile OS would have included almost all of the PalmOS functionality and features. Maybe a third party simply needs to assess the best features of each product and compile a list so that it can be integrated into one consolidated product. I guess it really just comes down to just a matter of user preference over anything else.
I'm impressed with the overall speed of the internet connections, and a nice unexpected feature is that when it's connected via USB cable to one of the computers, it actually uses the attached internet connection for applications and internet tasks rather then connecting to the mobile network.
I guess it's going to take me a little time to get used to it, but as with all things, I'm not too overly resistant to change. I can appreciate new technology and am looking forward to everything this phone has to offer. Cheers.
Congratulations! I've got a 650 myself and I love it! Not sure if you do any international travel but I've heard the 700's don't play well overseas. Outside of that you shouldn't have any problems.
I've seen a couple PocketPC phones and they are neat but I'm used to my Treo. The only thing I would like to change is the size, I wish it wasn't so bulky.
Hope you guys enjoy the new toys!
Cheers,
Jeremy
