My Blog: Living My Life Out Loud
Hello I'm Rich Brown and this is my personal website and blog. I'm just your simple, average, down to earth, professional, out gay man and aspiring circuit boy, living in Phoenix, Arizona with a few things to say while trying to find my place among all the scary, conservative, religious nuts in this sick and twisted world.

Don't Forget the Nose
This is just a quick tip for those of you out there who are completely clueless when it comes to general grooming habits. Don't forget about your nose. What do I mean don't forget about your nose you ask? Well I've noticed as of late, it seems many people just don't look in the mirror closely enough at their face. This is especially true for the area on and around the nose. Many people fail to see that they often have huge oil deposits in the pores of this area otherwise known as blackheads. Now while you may think it it's really nothing to get excited about, trust me, there are many of us would would absolutely disagree. Nothing bothers me more then to be talking to someone and see this giant black head on their nose staring out at me, ready to erupt like Old Faithful. It really takes all self-control for me to not excuse myself and reach in there and squeeze it out.

So if you're not sure what I'm talking about here, you're probably the one that better start looking more closely in the mirror. The moral of the story, when you get out of the shower or wash your face, don't forget the nose, have a look in the mirror. If you see black deposits in the pores of your nose, do something about them, get your fingers in there and squeeze them out yourself, because the rest of us really don't want to have to have an intervention. Cheers!

Crunch Time For WPPS 2007
Well this is it, the last week before the White Party Palm Springs 2007. It's crunch time to get ready, loose those last few extra pounds, put together our White outfits and prepare for our mini Gay-Getaway. I think I'm even a little more excited this year then I was last year. That's partly because I know what to expect this time, and I know that we're going to have a blast.

I'm super stoked about the DJ's, all my friends who are going, and having another weekend with everyone. I hope the weather remains nice and it's warm in Palm Springs. It's been a bit chilly here in Phoenix for the past few days, but is supposed to get back into the upper 80's by this weekend.

Well that's about all I have to say for now, Between work, gym and sleep, I don't have much time to write. Cheers!

What Berger Does All Day While I Work

Isn't he just so damn cute for 3 year old, 110-pound White German Shepherd puppy? You know he's thinking "What the hell do you have to do for a pillow around this place?" Cheers.

Brett Henrichsen & Offer Nissim

Can I just say how excited I am about having DJ Brett Henrichsen from Masterbeat and DJ Offer Nissim for Isreal spinning at the White Party Palm Springs this year. It should be a blast. I just got Offer NIssim's new CD in the mail from PerfectBeat yesterday and it is awesome. You should check it out!

Junior Vasquez at Burn Nightclub
You have got to be kidding me with this right? I cannot believe Burn Nightclub has been getting the best DJ's to out here to Phoenix. It's about time, god I'm actually starting to feel like I live in a real city again.

If you live in Phoenix, you love dance music and you don't go to this event you are completely stupid. Junior Vasquez has pretty much retired from the party scene so this may be one of the very last chances you will be able to see a legend like Junior spin.

We saw Junior spin at Parking in Montreal over Black & Blue 2006 week and he was absolutely amazing. Click on the link above and go buy your tickets now!

Burn The Night Away With Friends
So I bet you can't guess what we did last night. Ok, maybe you can ... That's right another rocking night at Burn Nightclub in Phoenix with my friends. But not first before having a little private photo shoot at home.

Justin and I grabbed a quick bite to eat and then headed down to the club around 10:30. Tonight was going to a little different then our usual night at Burn because Jerry had his monthly core event and decided to make a reservation for one of the VIP cabanas. The core is a group of Jerry's long time friends who get together each month to do something together.

While Justin and I are not part of the core, we're friends of the core, so we were invited to join them for drinks in the VIP cabana. Once Justin and I walked inside, our names were checked off the list, we were banded and then escorted up to the VIP area. Nice service I might add. Jerry and group was not there yet so we decided to take a stroll around the dance floor to see who was around.

I spoke with Clint and Jay earlier in the night and knew that they were coming out tonight for their first time out in a long time, so wanted to look around for them.

They haven't been out since the days of Boom being the only dance club in Phoenix, so it was nice to see them out again. They're going on their 7th Anniversary here in a few weeks, so congrats to them on that. I've known Clint and Jay for years as they used to be part of a social group that I was part of way back around 1997. The group doesn't exist anymore but I've managed to keep in touch with both Clint and Jay.

So after finding Clint and Jay and talking to them for a bit, we finally saw Jerry and crew arrive so we headed back over to the VIP cabana to meet up with them for the evening.

We also ran into Chris from Denver, and David & Aaron from Las Vegas, who we met Friday night at Amsterdam and will be going on the Atlantis Cruise to Mexico that Justin, me and then gang will all be going on in October.

By the time 2AM hit, and Burn Nightclub was wrapping up we were all pretty worn out. Jerry and crew were hanging out all over the VIP cabana sofa with the appearance that they weren't about to go anywhere at least not until asked too.

Jerry and Darin even posed for a photo. And for the record, they're both straight, so ladies, now's your chance. ;-)

We all decided to head over to Jerry's house for a pool party (afterhours) and some post-bar drinking. I think we hung out at until around 6am before Justin and I called it a night, errr morning rather, and headed home. Chalk up another fun night on the Phoenix scene at the Burn Nightclub with friends.

Another Friday Night Out
Last night was a little different the the previous Friday night. First of all it started with a pseudo-work happy hour. Bernie, the owner of Move Software, was in town to meet up with Mark, so he invited us all out for happy hour at Chelsea's Kitchen in Phoenix. Move Software, is a primary client of both Jerry and I, but Bernie is so down to earth and just a really fun guy to hang out with.

We started at Chelsea's Kitchen for happy hour, then on to Ticoz Restaurant for dinner and then over to Amsterdam for some drinks. I won't get into the full details of the evening, because it was your standard happy hour turn into dinner, turn into drinks and dancing. It was a really fun night out, and here are a few photos of the evening.

Are all these faces superimposed into one photo? Wierd!

Jerry and Mark

Wait a second ... Who's leg is that? *Grin*

Hey nice purse you have there Bernie!

Tonight Justin and I will be headed back over to Burn to meet up with Jerry and his core crew for a VIP party and some dancing. Should be a fun evening. As for now, I'm headed over to the gym for a quick working before the night begins. Cheers!

Great Times With Friends
First of all, I will give credit where due, I stole the photo on this post from Jerry. He had it posted on his blog at http://blog.jerrytimms.com/, if you haven't checked out Jerry's blog, then have a look, it's worth your time.

Anyway I can't say this enough but I'm really happy lately. I mean just all around happy and in a great mood. Life is going well, I'm in a great relationship, I have many friends, work is fun, and I'm just taking it all in. I wanted to post this photo on my blog because I love it. First of all it really shows how much fun we have together, and how incredibly handsome we all are!

Actually, the three of us all look so extremely happy here, and I think especially for me, this photo defines how I've been feeling lately.

So without getting too introspective, I was telling Justin the other day that this up and coming White Party is really an anniversary of some sorts for us. It's the anniversary of a few things. First and foremost where we decided to take control of our lives and get back into shape. We started all of that about a month before last years white party. Second it was our first major circuit party which little did we know was about to change everything from our future travel plans, to the frequency we see our friends, and even the new friends we met. It's an anniversary of new beginnings, new opportunities, new friends, and new relationships with old friends. It was like we died, took off our fat suits, and came into a whole new world. That's probably about the best way that I can explain it.

So with all that said, as I look back on this past year, it's been an absolutely amazing year, probably one of the best for me ever. As we move forward, I wouldn't ask for anything more, and I can only hope that things continue down this current path of happiness and prosperity for all of us. Cheers!

Fate & Burn Nightclub Phoenix with Friends
Saturday night was our first night out with Mark and Andrea in quite some time, too long to be honest. We've been traveling, they've been busy, we've been at the gym, they've had a house guest. For whatever reason, too much time has passed since we've seen each other, so we made firm plans for dinner on Saturday night. Andrea called me around 8 to see who was driving, and after picking them up, we then headed over to Fate on 4th & Roosevelt for dinner where Jerry also met up with us.

I've really grown quite fond of the smaller, quaint restaurants in Central Phoenix, with Fate being one of my favorites. Dinner was wonderful, but the drinks could have been a little better. Justin and I tried some Effen Cherry Vodka & Seven, but Mark and Andrea ventured out to try some of the house Martini specials. While the food is always good, my recommendation would be to stay away from the House Martini's unless you really enjoy cucumber and alcohol. After some amazing Chinese appetizers and authentic food, we packed in the car and headed down to Burn Nightclub again for a few drinks and some dancing.

As usual for a Saturday night, Burn was packed and we had to push our way through the crowd to get close to the bar for some drinks. As I was waiting patiently for Chris, my favorite Burn bartender, to get over to me, I felt someone grab my back from behind. I immediately turned to look at who was grabbing me to decided if a scowl or smile would be necessary. I was surprised to see Bruce and Tracy standing there behind me smiling. What a nice surprise to see them out, as I haven't seen them since our trip to San Francisco.

We had several drinks, danced, laughed, made a few new acquaintances and eventually closed out the bar. It was a fun evening spent with friends, and a nice way to spend St. Patrick's day without the obligatory green beer.

Red Anniversary Party At Burn Nightclub Phoenix
Last Friday night Jerry, Justin and I decided to go out for a bite to eat at FEZ and then head over to Burn Nightclub for the Red Magazine 2nd Anniversary Party. One word, lame. Not Burn of course, but the turnout for the party. Burn probably could have done better with a different event since either Red Magazine didn't promote the party, or everyone who was a part of Red left early because it was pretty dead by the time we got there around 11. I'm not sure if this is a sign to come for Red Magazine or not, but I would think that you would hopefully have more interested people show up for your 2nd Anniversary Party, but maybe that's just me.

Time To Sell & Move? All The Cool Kids Are Doing It!
This is something that's been on our mind for a while now. I've been thinking about writing a post regarding it, but I've held off until now. It seems that lately there is a trend among our friends to sell their houses and move to a new neighborhood here in Arizona. First Mykle & Doug sold their house in Chandler to move to a cute bungalow in Central Phoenix. Jerry then sold his house in Tempe to move to what we call the 'Governors Mansion' in Central Phoenix. Next Don & Kris sold their house in Central Phoenix to move to a bigger house in the respected Arcadia neighborhood in Scottsdale. Now Mark & Andrea are on the brink of listing their home and currently in search of the perfect house in the Willow District of Historic Downtown Phoenix.

Now Justin and I have long talked about selling our house and moving to Downtown Phoenix, but it's really just been a thought. We've wanted to get out of the suburbs, but we've never really been in a hurry and have always second guessed if it would be the right move for us at this time. We still chat about it with uncertainty, but it seems now that Mark & Andrea are planning to move out of our neighborhood, it leaves little reason for us to stay. Sure my Mother is only about 4 miles away which is a concern, but she will inevitably move close to wherever we decide to live.

As much as Justin and I have both wanted to live in a more central location to the activities and social events we both enjoy, one of the main factors holding us back has actually been our house. We simply love it. That's really about the only thing holding us here now. The other factor keeping us from moving to a more urban setting is actually Berger. I've not hidden the fact that I've long wanted to live high atop a multi-story condo high rise building, however the thought of having to take an elevator down to walk Berger does not appeal to me, and nor do I think it fair to him since he has free access to the back yard these days.

So with all that said I think Justin and I have come to somewhat of an agreement on the matter. We're going to take a compromise on the issue of moving and hang tight for now until we feel the time is right for us to eventually move to Los Angeles. Yes that's right, I said Los Angeles. I bet you didn't see that one coming did you? After spending a great deal of time there over the past few months we've come to the decision that we both really want to head back to California, and while we absolutely love San Francisco, it seems that Los Angeles will be a better place to suit our interests, lifestyle and climate desires.

I never thought I would actually want to live in Los Angeles, but I've really been thinking about it a lot lately. It has the restaurants, the shopping, the great weather, the beach, a huge gay community and an extremely liberal attitude. I never seriously considered Los Angeles because I've thought I wanted to be back in a walking city again, but the simple fact is the more time I've been spending there, the more I don't want to leave each time. In most of my trips to cities across the country, after a few days I'm ready to return home, but when I'm in Los Angeles I want to stay longer. It's a phenomenon that's been going on for each trip of mine out there. Justin and I both feel the same, and have had discussions at length on this issue. I think it's something that we're really committed to making happen over the next year or two. I've even talked to my Mother about it, who tells me I'm crazy with wanderlust, and insists she has absolutely no interest in moving to California, however I know she will go wherever we take her.

It's not something that's set in stone at this point, it's more of an idea and something that we are seriously considering. Now that I'm not chained to an office, it opens up a great deal of flexibility for us to live where we want. I'm not going to say that we still won't look around Downtown Phoenix and see if we find anything that interests us, but it just seems to me that we both feel like we've started to outgrow Arizona and are ready for a drastic change. I guess we'll see what happens since I'll be going out to spend another week in Los Angeles in May. Cheers.

I Love My Aussie Bum Patriot's

So for years now I've had this underwear dilemma. I went from your standard tighty whitey boys briefs as a child to the freedom of boxers during my university years to the better support of boxer briefs as of the last few years. Although I've changed styles, brands and designs many times, I never really felt completely happy with any of them until now.

A few months ago I tried my first pair of Aussie Bum Patriot Briefs. For the longest time I was really skeptical about going back to a brief because it was just reminiscent of my childhood underwear and I didn't want to feel like a little kid again. Well let me just say the Aussie Bum's are definitely not my childhood briefs. They are incredibly comfortable and come with a pouch in the front to hold your junk. That's right a pouch, named the 'wonderjock' pouch technology by Aussie Bum, it's basically meant to lift and throw it all out there in the front. According to Aussie Bum's website the Patriot briefs with the new 'wonderjock' pouch technology will "have you seriously looking bigger and feeling amazing."

While I'm not so concerned with the 'looking bigger' aspect of these briefs, I do have to say they are extremely comfortable. The pouch really functions well to keep all your junk tucked away so it's not hanging out somewhere it shouldn't be. I know pretty nifty right? One of the reasons I really like these are because with the low-rise jeans I've been wearing lately they feel comfortable and unlike boxer briefs they remain pretty tight and I don't have to worry about the legs stretching out and twisting inside of my pants when I'm out and about or dancing in a club.

Anyway if you get a chance to check them out I would highly recommend them and you can buy them online directly from Aussie Bum at http://www.aussiebum.com/ Cheers!

Is It Worth All The Effort?
My most recent photo ... Taken this morning at 1:53 AM after getting home from working out.

My Mother said today that I'm too skinny and she thinks I look anorexic. I think it's the Slovak genetics that blinds her to what people are actually supposed to look like.

Justin and I just got back from the gym a little bit ago and I'm tired, sore and my body totally aches. We've begun our ridiculously regimented diet and workout routine for the White Party and for that matter, the summer, which has us weight training in the gym 5x per week. Protein shakes, Creatine supplements, Two days of Chest & Back, two days of Arms & Shoulders and one day of legs. So far it's been pretty grueling and hard to keep up with which makes me wonder sometimes if it's worth all the effort.

Well the truthful answer to that question is absolutely yes for me. It's funny because I made an agreement with myself about 6 years ago to get myself into the best shape of my life. Well somewhere that fell short and it took me until last year to finally kick myself in the ass and get motivated to do something. I know this diet and workout isn't for everyone, and I have to admit it really does take a lot of will power and self-control, both of which I forget about sometimes, but manage to maintain most of the time. I say yes it's worth it because I feel better, I'm happier, and I'm much more confident these days then I ever was before. I'm not perfect, and I have a long way to go yet, but the gains I've seen from my effort have made me want to keep going. The nights where I'm sore, tired, grumpy and don't feel like going to the gym, I just have to think back to how much both Justin and I have achieved so far and how much more we want to accomplish. That's enough to keep me going.

I actually sometimes refrain from writing about my success with our diet and workout routine because I don't want to come across as the typical gay gym bunny only focused on self image, because we aren't. I'm really proud of us both, and the fact is, working out is an integral part of our life these days and it's something I'm completely unwilling to give up. Personally I think doing something like this is a decision that people have to make on their own and I would never criticize anyone for their choices. Justin and I committed to each other that we were going to set our minds too it and do it, we did. I think at any other point in our lives we really would never have been serious about making such a commitment and would have failed.

I have a lot of people ask me what was our secret, what did we do to loose so much weight, what did we do to start getting so buff. I always say the same three things. You really have to want it, you have to cut almost all carbs and work out intensely. It's really that simple. There is no magic diet, no special drink, you just have to want it and you just have to do it. Anything short of that won't be enough and you'll just set yourself up for failure.

Anyway enough of my rambling, I need to get my ass to bed so that I can get up and work in the morning. I just wanted to throw out another workout post out there as 1 a reminder to the rest of you circuit boys, you have less then a month away from the White Party Palm Springs, and two to just say how very worth all the effort is to me. Cheers!

Brian Schulze Is Hot!
When in Los Angeles last week I picked up a copy of 'In Los Angeles Magazine' It's the glossy entertainment, fashion, people, & lifestyles Magazine of Southern California, and I must say it is quite fabulous.

Well anyway I immediately recognized a familiar face on the cover, it was that of Brian Schulze, one of the bartenders from Here Lounge in West Hollywood. It was funny because Jerry has a photo of Brian from behind the bar at Here which was taken back in December, and Justin and I just saw him at an audition for a Aussie Bum Underwear Model on the Janice Dickinson show before I headed out to Los Angeles.

What I didn't know was that apparently Brian is also from Pennsylvania and a fitness trainer at Gold's Gym in Hollywood. It was an interesting article about him, and just confirmed something I already knew. Brian is hot! Anyway, if your in Los Angeles, pick up a copy of 'In Los Angeles Magazine' and stop by Here Lounge in West Hollywood to say hi to Brian.

Why Are People So Miserable? Lighten Up & Enjoy Life!
Have you ever wondered why people are so miserable sometimes. Perhaps miserable isn't exactly the correct word here, maybe bitter, jaded or negative would better words to describe the situation I'm referring too.

I bring this up because I'm a member of a few different discussion boards and it seems like all people are content on doing is bitching about everything. The most prominent example of this is on the Circuit Party Insanity group I belong too. It seems like it's a rare occasion when someone actually has something useful or positive to say. Most of the time people are commenting about why they hate this DJ or why this party was shitty or why they don't go to this event, or whatever. It's frankly annoying because it seems that the overwhelming number of overly bitter and negative people have a much stronger voice then the rest. Perhaps it's just that the rest don't care, I'm not really sure.

I guess I bring this up for a few reasons. First and foremost, life is just way too short to be miserable all the time. When someone constantly has only negative things to say regarding just about everything they encounter, that person really limits the possibilities for having a unique & pleasurable experience. I believe if you go into situations with an open mind, and no pre-conceived notions of how things will turn out, you completely open yourself up to a world of new experiences that you may have never before thought possible.

In the Circuit Party community for example, instead of bitching about a particular mainstream DJ and how terrible you think they may be, why not try to experience the situation from another point of view. Why not try to understand the 'story' this DJ brings to the dance floor, feel the energy of the people around you, and just go with the flow. Sure it might not be your favorite song, or preferred type of music, but going into the situation with an open mind and the desire for a new experience, you may just find yourself surprised in the end. If you go into the situation with a negative attitude from the start, then you are bound to have a miserable time without even giving it a chance in the first place.

I think if people would just open themselves up, stop being so bitter and negative about things, and try to experience everything possible, the world would be a much better place. It's the negativity all around us in this world that's a total buzz kill for the rest of us who choose to live life and actually try our best to even enjoy it. Don't you think life is too short to be miserable?

Pre-White Party at Burn Night Club
I'm a little behind in some of my posts so forgive me while I play catch up here.

So in the spirit of the season, Burn Nightclub in Phoenix threw a Pre-White Party / Fashion Show on Friday, March 2nd. The turnout was good, it was a fun event and surprisingly a majority of the crowd actually showed up in white attire.

I couldn't help to think when I looked around at the crowed dressed in White that many of these people actually don't even know what the real White Parties are all about, but non the less, perhaps it served as enough of a teaser for those who may have a curiosity for the real deal. Kudos to Burn for being able to pull it off successfully.

We stayed until close and danced the night away. Typically Friday's aren't a 'Burn' night for us, but if this is any indication of things to come that may change. Cheers!

Today Was a Bust!
I totally wanted to go down to the Beach this afternoon before it got dark, but I got sucked into finishing a ton of work that I had on my plate instead. It was all things that had to be done, and I feel like I made a great deal of progress tonight, so I'm not that distraught over it. I still have a few days left here and the bottom line is that Los Angeles is so close I can always come back again.

I've been enjoying my time with Philip, although starting this afternoon I'm going to be alone here for a few days while he's out on a business trip today to Nashville until Friday morning. With the exception of going out the first two evenings, I've not really done anything but work and go to the gym since I've been here. I haven't even eaten anything in the last three days besides a few protein shakes. Philip jokingly said I was at 'Fat Camp' this week and I had to follow the rules. Now while I'm certainly not 'fat' anymore, I am trying desperately to have that six pack by the time I go to Florida in October. It's been good and I've noticed a significant difference in just the few days I've been here. I'm hope that with a combination of the strict diet, intense workouts and Creatine supplements I'm now taking, I'll be exactly where I want to be in another month.

Alright well it's getting late and I have an early call in the morning so I need to get to bed and get some sleep. I'll catch up more tomorrow. Cheers!

There is Something About California
I don't know what it is, but ever since I set my first foot into California back in 1995 there is something about this state that really appeals to me. Perhaps its the smell of the ocean saltwater in the warm night breeze. Perhaps it's the lush tropical foliage surrounding so many quaint houses. Maybe it's just that whenever I'm in California I'm in a real city with amazing restaurants and a multitude of things to keep me busy. Whatever it is there is such an appeal to me about it.

After hanging out with Philip and watching some television I decided to head down by myself to the 24-hour on Ocean Park for a quick workout. I really wanted to work legs tonight, so I was intent on going. It was a little late, but I had been sitting in the apartment for the entire day and I just needed to get out for a bit. Philip decided to stay home and pack for his upcoming trip and head to bed early.

Once finished with my workout I decided to just go for a drive for a little bit. I headed up to Santa Monica Blvd, took a left and then headed toward the ocean. One of my favorite things about coming to SO CAL is being able to see the Ocean. I thought it would be nice to drive out to the coast and see the reflection of the moonlight in the water. Once I got to the end of Santa Monica, I drove up Ocean and then over to the Pacific Coast Highway. I just didn't feel like turning around so I took a drive up the coast a bit to Malibu. Unfortunately it was really dark outside and I couldn't see much of the water or anything else for that matter, but the smell of the ocean and the leisurely drive with minimal traffic was all worth it to me. I just wanted to get out and around for a little bit tonight.

After I got back to Philip's apartment tonight I had to park the car a few blocks away since that was the closest spot I could find. I was thinking on my walk from the car to the apartment about how quiet it was here in Philip's Santa Monica neighborhood. It was a nice evening outside, and the short walk was both calming and refreshing.

I'll probably head over to the beach in the evening one day this week so that I can play in the sand a bit and perhaps even catch the sunset over the ocean. I'm planning on getting out of the house tomorrow and heading up to West Hollywood to sit and work from a coffee shop or some place with wireless access. There is no point in coming all the way out to Los Angeles and not taking advantage of the weather and opportunity I have to get out and spend some time in the city.

Anyway it's getting late and I have to work in the morning so I'm probably going to sign off and try to get a few hours of sleep. I'll post some photos once I get them downloaded off my camera later this week. Stay tuned! Cheers!

Enjoying Myself In Los Angeles
So I arrived here in Los Angeles on Saturday evening around 10:30 PM. After finding my way to Philip's apartment and unloading my trunk of clothes for the week, we prepared to go out for the evening. First a drink here at the apartment, and then Philip and I headed over to West Hollywood to patronize some of the normal Saturday evening gay Los Angeles hang outs. The Mother Loade, The Abbey and then on to Mickey's for after hours.

Sunday was spent sleeping in and then heading over to the gym for a good workout. On Sunday evening we headed over to a club called Area which is typically straight, but was having it's monthly gay night event. The club was very upscale and the place was packed. Philip and I grabbed some drinks and melted into the crowded dance floor to enjoy the music. At one point I turned my head and Jai from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy was standing next to me talking to a friend of his. Very shortly after, Carson Kressley walked from the VIP room into the bathroom right behind me. It's all still a bit surreal for me to be out here in Los Angeles and be constantly running into celebrities.

I spent the day today working am going to be on my way to the gym here shortly. I'm enjoying my time here, and it's been a good trip knowing that I don't have to feel rushed to do things. I think I could get used to it out here, but that's a yet another discussion left for some other day.
